Peter Sarstedt – Where Do You Go To My Lovely lyrics
You talk like Marlene Dietrich
And you dance like Zizi Jeanmaire
Your clothes are all made by Balmain
And there's diamonds and pearls in your hair, yes there are.

You live in a fancy apartment
Off the Boulevard of St. Michel
Where you keep your Rolling Stones records
And a friend of Sacha Distel, yes you do.

You go to the embassy parties
Where you talk in Russian and Greek
And the young men who move in your circles
They hang on every word you speak, yes they do.

But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head, yes i do.

I've seen all your qualifications
You got from the Sorbonne
And the painting you stole from Picasso
Your loveliness goes on and on, yes it does.

When you go on your summer vacation
You go to Juan-les-Pines
With your carefully designed topless swimsuit
You get an even suntan, on your back and on your legs.

And when the snow falls you're found in St. Moritz
With the others of the jet-set
And you sip your Napoleon Brandy
But you never get your lips wet, no you don't.

But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
would you Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head, yes I do.

You're in between 20 and 30
A very desirable age
Your body is firm and inviting
But you live on a glittering stage, yes you do, yes you do.

Your name is heard in high places
You know the Aga Khan
He sent you a racehorse for Christmas
And you keep it just for fun, for a laugh ha-ha-ha

They say that when you get married
It'll be to a millionaire
But they don't realize where you came from
And I wonder if they really care, or give a damn

But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head, yes i do.

I remember the back streets of Naples
Two children begging in rags
Both touched with a burning ambition
To shake off their lowly-borne tags, they try

So look into my face Marie-Claire
And remember just who you are
Then go and forget me forever
But I know you still bear
the scar, deep inside, yes you do

I know where you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
I know the thoughts that surround you
'Cause I can look inside your head.

I met a man in 1969. He was an Air Force Officer. We continued our love affair for forty years. He is married and so was I. I was a motel receptionist when I met him in 1969 and this was regarded as "our song". By 2010 I had A Bachelor's Degree and a Diploma of Teaching in Greek. I went on to do a Master's degree in Greek, although I have no Greek background. Although I had no contact with him for ten years, just a week ago I sensed there was something wrong with my lover. I called him and he told me that he was waiting for the results of a test for cancer of the prostate. I had not spoken to him for ten years. Work that one out. We talked for 2 and a half hours, and not for the first time I felt that no time had passed since our first meeting in 1969. The song is still "our song" but he 'phoned me on the day he received his results and he is dying. I love him so much. How was I to know in 1969 that I would learn Greek? It was by no means deliberate. Marie Claire had somehow fulfilled that prophecy. My last words to him a week ago were "go and forget me forever, but know that I still bear the scars, deep inside". "Go in Peace, my love".

I too loved this song from the first time I heard it played on a battered jukebox dans un café surrounded by a sea of leather-clad bikers back in the '60s. There was never any mystery to me of the song's meaning. A young woman using her stunning face and body to progress from the gutter, while her lovestruck and deserted male friend could only watch and wish from afar. I have played this so many times. A simple melody. Few chords. But filled with anxst and unfulfilled desire.

Personally I believe the song is a little more than "sour grapes". Marie Claire has attained what she considers success, probably correctly. The singer has not attained her level of success in either of their minds. But because of where she comes from she probably doesn't feel it is real. She knows her socialite friends do not and cannot understand her, that is why when she is alone she can be what she believes she is. The singer is not so much announcing the sour grapes but telling her that no matter her success, no matter how much out of place she feels, how much she feels that she is alone, there is someone who understands her and that it doesn't matter that they never see one another again she is not truly alone. There is some one who does understand.

My interpretation is the Fox declaring the Grapes as sour, given it's out of reach. Two Children, Street Waifs really, begging in rags. Her life was focused on shaking her lowly brown tags, and so she did. She attained Class, Culture, dined with Kings and had the World at her feet. I say ten cheers for her, let Orchestras come together, and create "A Symphony for Marie Claire". Give the Girl an applause, let the brilliance of her Star shine through and guide another Waif to fulfilling an existence, of "Great Expectations". She Tallawah fe true.

I feel it means that no matter how many of the 'trappings' of wealth and position you attain, you are always aware of your roots. Despite yourself. Marie Claire no doubt enjoys her current lifestyle, but when her guard is down, like when she is asleep, it is her past that haunts her. "He" knows what's inside her head simply because it's what's inside his head. Their shared history.

I have been captivated by the song since I first heard it on its release. It is the inspiration for my novel "Tramps Like Us" where I have built my own interpretation of the story surrounding the lyrics - I have told a story about rekindled friendship. As per posting rules, I have not included a link but It is available on Amazon Kindle Store. If you do read it, I would be interested in your thoughts.

To me this speaks of a high life that is devoid of substance. Even the race horse is just for a laugh. The painting was stolen and she is subsequently, and sarcastically, described as lovely. Even if her friends discover her roots they won't care because all that matters to them is the superficial. But where she has come from is important and the writer wants to remind her of that. If she remembers the struggle she will understand that her life is worth more than all her transitory attachments.

It's about a brother and sister growing up in poverty and him tracking her rise in society - this happens a lot - do what you have to do to - get what you want - then regret your actions - women are very good at doing this then play the victim - everything about this song is great!

A little more than "Sour Grapes" is correct. I am an Australian man who has achieved a degree of success, just like Marie. I often think that Marie and I are very similar, and words to this song ring very true with me.
The writer of "Sour Grapes" is very perceptive.
