Nick Mulvey – Cucurucu lyrics
Softly, in the evening dusk, a woman is singing to me;
She takes me back down the vista of my years, until I see
I see a child underneath the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
Pressing the poised feet of his mother who smiles at him as she sings.

Cucurucu, cucurucu

Softly now in the evening dusk, a woman is singing to me;
She takes me back down the vista of my years, until I see
A boy, a child underneath the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
Pressing the poised feet of his mother who smiles at him as she sings
Yearning to belong, yearning to belong
My heart beats with a ceaseless longing of a yearning to belong
In spite of myself, and all of these nursery songs
My heart beats with a ceaseless longing of a yearning to belong

Cucurucu, cucurucu
Singing cucurucu, cucurucu

Till the melodies of childish days, are upon, upon me
And they take me back, back down the river
They keep leading me on, they lead me to the sea
And all of my manhood is cast
Down in the flood of remembrance, and I weep like a child for the past.

Singing cucurucu, cucurucu
Singing cucurucu, cucurucu

I see a child underneath the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
Pressing the poised feet of his mother who smiles at him as she sings.
Listen to me son, I'll tell you why your feather's strong
Cause he can still say every single day, he's yearning to belong
Yearning to belong, yearning to belong
My heart beats with a ceaseless longing of a yearning to belong
In spite of myself, and all of these nursery songs
My heart beats with a ceaseless, meets with a peaceless burning to belong

Singing cucurucu, cucurucu
Singing cucurucu
Singing cucurucu, cucurucu

This song is a memoir. A look into a moment of the writers life. The writer remember sitting with his Mom while she plays the piano, even though she is singing him nursery songs and speaking to him with soft child friendly sounds "cucurucu" the writer still has a "yearning" to fit in to "belong" to someone or something.
This memory is the only place where the writer feels at ease although its possible its only a fleeting level of comfort until reality once again sets in "They keep leading me on, they lead me to the sea
And all of my manhood is cast
Down in the flood of remembrance, and I weep like a child for the past"
His mother sees this as a strong attribute that her son has inherited from his father'I'll tell you why your feather's strong
Cause he can still say every single day, he's yearning to belong
'.This line is sang with some sound of comfort in knowing the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and therefore a connection is made between him and his father possibly (hopefully) allowing him some sense of belonging!

The first verse is extremely similar to the first stanza and final lines of a poem called Piano by D.H. Lawrence, not quite word for word however it is obvious that he has drawn from here. In this poem the poet is listening to a song when he begins to have memories of his mother. She is displayed as a loving and nurturing figure, emphasised by the use of sibilance especially in the first line, as well as creating a personal and homely feeling. The use of third person in "I see a child underneath the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings.
Pressing the poised feet of his mother who smiles at him as she sings" makes him seem disconnected from the memory as if he doesn't want to remember it or he is trying not to.
The oxymoronic "boom of the tingling strings" conveys the complexity of his emotions and memories; strong but gentle; painful but comforting.
Towards the end he says "And all of my manhood is cast. / Down in the flood of remembrance, and I weep like a child for the past." which links back to beginning as it is almost as if he has become the child at the beginning whilst remembering his mother. The "flood" creates the image of water, and its destructive power, perhaps how the loss of his mother feels. However water also often represents cleansing and innocence, as well as the ability to heal, suggesting that it is necessary for him to leg go, and allow the dam to break, following the water analogy, in order to heal over time. This demonstrates the hold that a mothering figure can have even when dead or gone.
The song then goes on to talk about his father, and on these points I agree with the others, however I felt it might be useful for some to know the origin of these lyrics. It's a beautiful poem if anyone wants to read it.

Except he does not sing "they keep leading me on, they lead me to the sea and all of my manhood is cast" but he sings "they keep leading me on, they lead me until i see that all of my manhood is cast" does it not just even make more sense?
