John Conlee – Rose Colored Glasses lyrics
I don't know why I keep on believin you need me
When you prove so many times that it ain't true
And I can't find one good reason for staying
Maybe by leaving would be the best for you

But these rose colored glasses, that I'm looking through
Show only the beauty, cause they hide all the truth

And they let me hold on to the good times, the good lines
The ones I used to hear when I held you
And they keep me from feeling so cheated, defeated

When reflections in your eyes show me a fool
These rose colored glasses, that I'm looking through
Show only the beauty, cause they hide all the truth

So I just keep on hope-in, believin that maybe
By countin the many times I've tried
You'll believe me when I say I love you and
I'll lay these rose colored glasses aside

These rose colored glasses, that I'm looking through
Show only the beauty, cause they hide all the truth

I think it is a husband and wife that have been together for a very long time and maybe have grown apart. They are staying together for some reason, even though she probably doesn't love him as much anymore as he loves her. His "glasses" hide that she doesn't love him, and he still sees her as the beautiful woman he married long ago. On one hand, he thinks it would be best if he left, then they would both be happier: she would be independent, and he wouldn't have to suffer through each day, loving a woman who doesn't reciprocate love. On the other hand, he has hope that she will love him once again. Laying his "glasses" aside, means leaving her and finally facing the pain of the reality.

Rose colored glasses are worn by everyone. To hide those things we can not bear. Once we can bear the issue, the rose colored glasses come off. Mind you, we will never be without rose colored glasses unless we are in deep depression and may not come back till we die. After we die, we go to Heaven for those that believe in God, and it is perfect Joy and Happiness. So, have joy and happiness when you can take them off, and in the mean time, have hope and faith, and wear those rose colored glasses. Don't give up.

He is in denial of the truth that she doesn't love him anymore and the undercurrent of all that is going on behind the scene e.g. her cheating. The metaphor of the "rose colored glasses" is his denial of the painful reality, because of his love for her he wont accept anything less. In finishing he hopes that she will come to her senses that he does indeed love her and she will reciprocate, and then he won't have to wear the glasses of denial anymore.

In this world, we are not meant to be happy and have joy. As Christians, because it is so bad, we wear rose colored glasses till we can handle the truth of the situation. But, it is not till we pass that it is perfectly clear, that joy and happiness is present- Love. But we have some hope, faith and love on Earth. Jesus was killed because he was perfect Love. If you become perfect love, most likely you will die. Once you die in Jesus, you have the Spirit of God and God with you, you will be perfectly happy and joyful in Heaven. In Heaven, is only joy and Happiness. And, there are no rose colored glasses there either- because it is made up of 100% Love.

I believe he's talking about seeing life through the bottom of an alcoholic glass. " Only allows the beauty and hides all the truth". However, it's a metaphor because of the actual sunglasses he wears. After all, who would write a deep song about freaking sunglasses? Listen to all the lyrics and decide.

The song makes more sense when the verses are read in reverse order. The third verse lets us know he's having a hard time convincing her that he really loves her. The second verse lets us know that there was a time when they were very happy but something happened that changed the way she feels about him, and now he feels cheated of that past love that was lost, and defeated because of that same event. Then finally the first verse lets us know his efforts are not winning her back leading him to think leaving might be the best thing for her, never suggesting that she wants to go. I get the feeling he has somehow hurt her and can never regain her trust, the purity of their previous love maybe lost forever, but hopefully, somehow not...

Or maybe he doesn’t love her anymore or feel the same way he once did...but convinces himself to stay because he hopes that by seeing things through rose colored glasses, they can both regain the love and connection they once had. Maybe it’s him who’s no longer in love and has to wear the glasses in order to keep convincing himself that he loves her and wants to try and stay, bc he remembers the good times and the whole “cheated and defeated” could be about his pride bc He feels like he’s been cheating of the time he could’ve had in a true relationship ship yet defeated bc he doesn’t want to give up...bc a lot of times, men feel like failures when they can’t make something work, even if it’s bc of their own feelings of not wanting to remain in the situation. But I don’t know. Just my theory.

He is in love with a much younger woman. She is playing him because she needs an athoritative figure in her life to keep her safe. He knows that she is young, but is very well able to take care of herself, yet she keeps him hanging on. He is weary of the things she says and does so he tries to look past those things and only look at the good things about her. Hoping that she will mature and become the woman that he loves and needs. Unfortunately, he will be wearing those rose colored glasses for a long time to come, as she will remain the same for the rest of his life.
