High School Musical 2 – I Don't Dance lyrics
(Ryan) Hey, batter, batter, hey batter, batter swing.

(Chad) I've got to just do my thing.

(Ryan) Hey, batter, batter, hey batter, batter swing.

(Chad) Yeah

(Ryan)
I'll show you that it's one and the same:
Baseball, dancing, same game.
It's easy:
Step up to the plate, start swingin.

(Chad) I wanna play ball now, and that's all.
This is what I do.
It ain't no dance that you can show me. Yeah

(Ryan) You'll never know

(Chad) Oh I know.

(Ryan) If you never try.

(Chad) There's just one little thing that stops me everytime yeah.

(Ryan) Come on!

(Chad) I don't dance.

(Ryan) I know you can.

(Chad) Not a chance. No.

(Ryan) If I can do this, well, you can do that.

(Chad) But I don't dance.

(Ryan) Hit it out of the park!

(Chad) I don't dance.

(Ryan) I say you can.

(Chad) There's not a chance.

(Ryan) Slide home, you score, swingin' on the dance floor.

(Chad) I don't dance, no.

(Ryan)Hey, batter, batter, hey batter, batter swing.

(Chad) I've just got to do my thing.

(Ryan)Hey, batter, batter, hey batter, batter swing.

(Chad) Yeah.

(Ryan)
Two-steppin, now you're up to bat.
Bases loaded, do your dance.
It's easy:
Take your best shot, just hit it.

(Chad)
I've got what it takes, playin my game,
So you better spin that pitch you're gonna throw me, yeah.
(Ryan and Chad) I'II show you how I swing.

(Ryan) You'll never know

(Chad) Oh I know.

(Ryan) If you never try.

(Chad)There's just one little thing that stops me every time. Yeah.

(Ryan)Come on!

(Chad) I don't dance.

(Ryan) I know you can.

(Chad) Not a chance. No no.

(Ryan) If I can do this, well, you can do that.

(Chad) But I don't dance.

(Ryan) Hit it out of the park!

(Chad) I don't dance.

(Ryan) I say you can.

(Chad) There's not a chance, oh no.

(Ryan) Slide home, you score, swingin' on the dance floor.

(Chad) I don't dance, no.

(Ryan) Lean back, tuck it in, take a chance.
Swing it out, spin around, do the dance
.

(Chad) I wanna play ball, not dance hall.
I'm makin a triple, not a curtain call.

(Ryan)
I can prove it to you till you know it's true,
'Cause I can swing it, I can bring it to the diamond too.

(Chad)
You're talkin a lot
Show me what you got
.
Stop.

(All) Swing!

(Ryan)
Hey
Come on, swing it like this.
Oh, swing!

(Chad) Ooh

(Ryan) Jitterbug... just like that.

That's what I mean; that's how you swing.

(Chad) You make a good pitch, but I don't believe.

(Ryan) I say you can.

(Chad) I know I can't.

(Chad) I don't.

(Ryan and Chad) Dance!

(Ryan) You can do it.

(Chad) I don't dance, no.

(Ryan) Nothin' to it. Atta boy, atta boy. Yeah.

(Chad)
Hey, batter, batter, hey batter, batter what?

(Ryan) One, two, three, four, everybody swing!

(Ryan and Chad) Come on!

(Chad) I don't dance.

(Ryan)I know you can.

(Chad) Not a chance. No no.

(Ryan) If I can do this, well, you can do that.

(Chad) But I don't dance.

(Ryan) Hit it out of the park!

(Chad) I don't dance.

(Ryan) I say you can.

(Chad) Not a chance. No no.

(Ryan) Silde home, you score, swingin on the dance floor.

(Chad) I don't dance, no.

I agree, I think it's about Chad's sexuality. They even use the term "I'll show you how I swing". I hate to be that person who says "oh, Ryan's really nice, he likes music, and he's preppy, so he must be gay!" but it definitely seems as though he was portrayed that way. Chad is so fixed on the idea that he has to be straight, and Ryan is encouraging him to accept who he really is.

Ryan is encouraging Chad to come to come to terms with his feelings. He keeps feeling better about coming to terms with these things throughout the song and at this point, Chad is at the verge of coming to terms with his homosexuality and Ryan is just trying to push him over by saying "atta boy" almost like saying "yeah that's right almost."

As many other people have said, this song seems like it is definitely all about Ryan trying to get Chad to explore his sexuality, that it is not all about 'baseball' and he can feel free to 'dance' too if that is what he prefers. Baseball and dancing are definitely metaphors for being straight or gay. Perhaps when Ryan says he can do both, he is suggesting that he is bisexual, but since he is better at dancing, he either leans more towards guys or he could be biromantic homosexual. When Ryan says 'Hey batter batter, hey batter batter, swing' he is trying to get Chad (the batter) to 'swing' his way. And when he says that baseball and dancing are the same, he is saying that whether you have a relationship with a man or a relationship with a woman, it doesn't matter and doesn't make you any less of a man. Chad, however, refuses. He says 'I wanna play ball, now and that's all', meaning (he thinks) he is only attracted to women. Ryan obviously knows that this isn't true which is why when Chad says that he doesn't 'dance' Ryan says that he knows he can. Also, when Ryan says 'you'll never know, if you never try', he is telling Chad that he has to try new things in order to know how he really feels about both sexes. Chad jumps in saying he does 'know', but the fact that he interrupts Ryan is showing that he still isn't sure but he wants Ryan to stop talking about it. And then Chad says 'there's just one little thing that stops me everytime. I don't dance' etc. which means that he stops himself from being intimate with other men because he has told himself over and over that he is straight. The song goes on like this, Ryan telling Chad in different ways that it is ok for Chad to explore his sexuality (still using baseball and dancing as metaphors) and Chad still saying that he knows he doesn't swing that way. Near the end, when Chad starts dancing, Ryan encourages him saying 'you can do it. Atta boy atta boy' because he knew he could dance and he wants him to take it further and... let's say, start dancing with him instead.

I think it is a metaphor for gay sex. The whole song is Chad supressing himself, trying not only to convince Ryan, but convince himself that he isn’t gay. When Ryan says “Hey batter batter swing” he is meaning “Hey Chad, swing my way, which is gay.” Baseball and dancing are metaphors for straight and gay sex, which Ryan says are one in the same, the same game. Chad disagrees and is reluctant. Ryan says “You’ll never know if you never try.” In the middle of the second verse, Chad starts to give in saying “You better spin that pitch you’re gonna throw me, I’ll show you how I swing.” basically meaning he’s a top. The dance break is them having sex. You will see in the next scene of the movie they are both wearing each other’s clothes, this is because they got dressed in a hurry after doing it.

Everybody mad about people saying it’s a kids movie and that chad and Ryan are having a sexually homosexual moment is just delusional with their fantasies sorry to burst your bubble Ryan is gay sure and that’s fine but chad isn’t just stop it was literally a scene of them playing baseball taking a break from the summer job and plus the dancing stuff isn’t about his sexuality it’s about how he thinks he’s a athletic guy who even in the first movie thought all a guy should be is a athlete the dance metaphor is about him being like Troy someone who isn’t only athletic but also a great performer

Stop looking too damn far into a song in a movie meant for kids, you damn Trumps. Seriously. There is absolutely nothing going on between Chad and Ryan. None. Whatsoever. And there is no gay subtext (nothing against gays, but y'all just lookin' a little too far into it, that's all) in the song. There is absolutely nothing hidden between the damn lines. And if you downvote, that just means y'all are a buncha salty little trolls. Because only a salty troll would downvote the damn truth. Y'all just can't handle the truth. Fucking idiots. Downvoting means you're so dumb, you make Gumball Watterson from The Amazing World of Gumball seem like Bill Gates in comparison. There's no hidden subtext in the song at all. None. Whatsoever. Stop trying to find things that aren't even there, you fucktards. It's not a metaphor for anything at all. And it's not about sexuality either, you damn clods. It doesn't mean anything. It's just a goddamn movie. It's about as hidden as Russia on a map of Asia. Or United States on a map of North America. Or Brazil on a map of South America. Or Australia on a map of Oceania. In other words, not at all. In conclusion, y'all are stupid!

This is just a kids movie that was my entire childhood stop reading so far into this song its just a happy song for kids to enjoy Disney isn't going to make it into something its not. Ryan is just trying to convince chad that he can dance and it's not that hard and hey better hey better swing is just a term that people say about baseball! So plaese stop thinking it's something different, now every time I hear that song I'm going to think about you're comments and I really don't think that's ok.
