With this song Taylor Swift is apologizing to her former boyfriend Taylor Lautner for ending their relationship. They met on the set of the film "Valentine's Day" (2010) where they played a couple.

Taylor Swift told Comcast, "'Back To December' is a song that addresses a first for me, in that I've never apologized to someone in a song before. This is about a person who was incredible to me, just perfect in a relationship, and I was really careless with him. So, this is a song full of words that I would say to him that he deserves to hear."

The line "So if the chain is on your door I understand" was once changed by Taylor Swift to "So this is for the boy from Michigan" when she performed this song at a show in Staples Center. Taylor Lautner is from Michigan.

The music video was directed by Yoann Lemoine who told MTV News, "I wanted to work on the coldness of feelings in a very visual way, playing with the snow, the distance and sadness." He added, "The snow in the apartment is supposed to show how connected she is to him. He is outside, in the cold, but somehow she is connected to him."

During a 2016 Facebook Live interview promoting the 2016-17 season of Scream Queens, Taylor Lautner was asked by co-star Lea Michele about Taylor Swift, "Didn't she write a song about you? I think it's something about a sweater and a hat, right?" Lautner replied, "That's what she does. She writes songs. It's called 'Back to December'."
