"To Love Somebody" lyrics

"To Love Somebody"

There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be lived with you
Lived with you
There's a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain't got you, ain't got? Hey babe

You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so so sorrily blind
I'm a man, can't you see
What I am
I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you, ain't got? Hey babe

You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

Ooh

You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

No no no-no no no

You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

Robert Stigwood, the band's manager, requested this song, and the Bee Gees recorded it in July 1967. It was originally intended for Otis Redding, but he died later that year. Barry Gibb explained in an interview with Mojo magazine in June 2001, "It was for Robert. I say that unabashedly. He asked me to write a song for him, personally. It was written in New York and played to Otis but, personally, it was for Robert."
Being one of the most famous Bee Gees compositions, this song was covered by many performers, including The Animals, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Michael Bolton, Tom Jones, Michael Bublé.
The single reached number 17 in the United States and number 41 in the United Kingdom. Barry Gibb explained a minor success in the UK, saying, "I think the reason it didn't do well here was because it's a soul number, Americans loved it, but it just wasn't right for this country".
